أ.د.صالح جواد الطعمة
My apologies for not responding promptly to your sad news. We were out-of- town during the past few days. I am truly sorry to learn about the death of al-?allamah al-shaykh Abd al-Rahman al-Bathi. His death saddened me in ways more than one. We lost a rare model of scholars dedicated to the pursuit and promotion of knowledge and enlightenment through dialogues and informal discourse. It saddened me to know that al-Bathi?s multi-faceted and rich legacy has not been committed to writing during his life time. Though I have not read any of his writings, my brief experience attending his lively salon has left me with memorable impressions of his stature as a free and stimulating thinker/educator. I was particularly impressed by his encyclopedic knowledge, his tolerant orientation, and his grasp of, or familiarity with, global intellectual trends or issues in diverse fields. I deeply regret having missed the opportunity to know more about him and to attend more of his informal sessions. I sincerely hope that efforts will be made by al-Bathi?s students, and other intellectuals who have attended his salon to preserve for posterity highlights of al- Bathi?s rich career, his views on significant issues of the day and other unpublished material. Salih
